Do you enjoy listening to music? Is it part of your routine while studying or at work? It’s prevalent for people to use music to stay focused on their priorities. There is plenty of research showing that music helps concentration, with some types improving overall productivity.

If you’re a current or former student, music is something you may value. I wasn’t one of them, but I recalled my peers wearing their headphones on the go or while studying. Even where I work, people wear headphones to help them get work done. Unlike what I discuss in other posts, I will discuss some of the benefits that help you stay focused. According to a study conducted by Florida National University, it found that listening to soft, ambient music reduces stress and anxiety while improving work performance. Also, it can lower blood pressure and heart rate levels. They researched ways for current students to reduce test anxiety. This factor is pervasive for college students, which is why many of them take advantage of listening to music.

It’s widely known that music helps change people’s moods for the better. So it’s best to listen to music that you enjoy listening to. If it’s music that gets you pumped up or makes you relaxed, that provides benefits to changing your mood. It also helps to have some musical training early in life. Whether that’s offered in public schools or through private programs, children learning the sounds of music can be very beneficial. These benefits would include healthier brains and less likely to develop brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

As mentioned earlier, they have linked ambient music to higher levels of focus and productivity. Common types of ambient music include nature sounds and orchestra music. Although this music may sound boring, it’s much better to listen to doing active tasks. These activities may include studying, doing household chores, or doing deep (focused) work at the office. Orchestra music especially can help soothe the mind, leading to better focus at work.

Though ambient music may not be for everybody, it can be a great challenge for anyone to get more things done. Other types of music (rock, hip-hop, rap) grab your attention. They can make some people distracted by listening to the lyrics rather than the exact sound. But with ambient music, it doesn’t come with much variety; therefore, there are no surprises that come along with them. So it’s designed to softer music for concentration and even make some people relax.

Listening to music is very common while studying and at the office. When it comes time to study for final exams, students need to be in complete-focus moods. Or for working at your job, a specific type of music can help you concentrate on your most important tasks. I knew some coworkers who listened to music when they needed to work on demanding projects. It can vary, but when those deadlines come, listening to music can be very helpful.

One reason for listening to music is for people to block off any noise and distractions. In my last few jobs, some areas I worked in were very noisy and distracting. I never took advantage of using headphones since the work environment didn’t bother me that much. But many of my coworkers wore headphones (either listening to music or podcasts) to zone out those distractions. I imagine if they didn’t do that, the noise would have bothered them. Not everyone may need headphones, but it’s an excellent way to stay focused and avoid those inconveniences.

My own experiences listening to music

When I work at my job, I don’t listen to music because I’m always walking around the office. But outside of work, I’ll listen to some music when I write a blog post or doing light research at home. I like the quiet and peaceful time to myself, but I also want to turn on some music in the background now and then. Types of music that relaxes me include jazz, nature sounds, and some orchestra music. These types of music help me perform best during my peak periods, and when I need to relax and wind down.

Overall, listening to music has many benefits to improve brain functions. Particularly for concentration, it can be an excellent resource for studying or working on big projects at work. It may not be for everyone, but many people will listen for fun or focus time. As I just talked about, I listen to music when I’m by myself in a place where there are little distractions.

I bring this interesting research up because many people struggle with concentration. If you work at a place where it’s distracting, it’s best to look into some headphones (if permitted where you work at). For the best results, I recommend getting playlists together that comprise soft, ambient music. You never know if it’ll help you feel less stressed out and potentially increase your productivity.
