DESKTIME REVIEW 2020: Best Employee Time Tracker Software?

Are you looking for a better way to keep track of your team’s time at work? Do you want to make sure your team stays focused on the right tasks? If you’re an employer who manages a small or large organization, you want to make sure your team members are productive. How their time is spent can make a difference in growing your business. There are many time management and time tracker tools, but you’re looking for the best one out there. One employer time tracker software that’s popular in 2020 is DeskTime.

Employee Time Tracker Software: DeskTime Time Tracker Tool

DeskTime is an automatic time tracking software that keeps track of an employee’s productivity. There are three main areas DeskTime focuses on their software: employee monitoring, project management, and productivity analysis. The company started in 2011 under the direction of the Draugiem Group, a Latvia based IT company. The purpose of using DeskTime was to increase workplace transparency and make sure the employee’s time is spent wisely. The software was used by the Draugiem Group and became available to other companies in the following years.

Today, there are more than 8,000 companies that use DeskTime to keep track of their employee’s time. As one of the best time tracking software programs, DeskTime continues to work and help more companies make the most of their time. Since they launched nine years ago, more than 81 million hours have been tracked, which is the equivalent of 9268 years. As stated on their website, DeskTime{in linear time} has followed every minute “since homo sapien domesticated cats in around 8000 BC.” If you think about that, that’s a lot of time that nobody can ever imagine or think of today.

In this post, I will do a brief review of DeskTime and what it may have to offer you in keeping track of time at work. The following points include:

1.) Top features

2.) Pricing options

3.) Pros and cons

4.) Overall review and rating

Employee Time Tracker Software: DeskTime Top Features

DeskTime has multiple features to help users make the most out of using the time tracker. Some of the highlighted, most popular features include the following:

  • Automatic Time Tracking

Employee Time Tracker Software- 1

With automatic time-tracking, DeskTime starts and stops working when you do. From the minute you start work to your final minute of the workday, it will keep track of all productive and non-productive activities you’re engaged in. The best part about automatic time tracking is by eliminating manual data entry. Absent that extra work, DeskTime calculates productivity automatically for you.

  • Screenshots

Employee Time Tracker Software- 2Every 5-30 minutes, DeskTime will take screenshots (regular or blurred) of what your employees are working on. This feature gives a detailed view of each user’s efficiency and monitoring of remote employees. Any activity that appears unproductive will automatically be shot for a manager to monitor.

Although it may sound creepy, it’s not meant for employers to micromanage their team. As DeskTime mentions, it should be used for scanning purposes, not scrutinizing your team. If someone is having trouble staying focused, make sure to discuss the issue with them. More so, it’s good practice to notify your team that they’re monitored under this feature for time management purposes.

  • URL & App Tracking

This feature allows you to break down which websites, programs, and applications your employees use. From there, you can categorize which ones are productive or non-productive for completing work tasks. It’s an excellent way to see how your employees spend their day through the time tracker.

  • Offline Time Tracking

This feature allows you to collect data on time spent away from the computer. You can specify reasons for absence, along with marking tasks as productive, unproductive, or neutral. The feature gives you a better overview of your team’s workload, time management, and productivity.

  • Pomodoro Timer

About the Pomodoro technique, the feature allows users to set timers for working. You can take a break every 52 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes. Every person is different when it comes to taking breaks, so it’s important to remind your team to take breaks. Doing this practice can help your team stay focused and avoid burnout.

  • Private Time Option

This option allows your employees to do non-related work for a brief time. Whether they need to make a personal phone call, the private time option is an excellent way not to track website or app usage during this period.

  • Work Schedules

Creating a schedule through DeskTime is more efficient and reported to be six times faster than using basic spreadsheets. With this feature, you get a basic overview of shifts and likely to avoid overstaffing or understaffing.

  • Employee Absence Calendar

This calendar allows employees to plan their schedules while letting their team know when they’ll be off work. It’s good to avoid questions of employee whereabouts or absences, along with helping plan everyone’s workload.

Overall Review: One of the best time tracking software tools in 2020

Rating: 8.5/10

Since launching their software nearly nine years ago, DeskTime continues to be one of the leading time tracking software programs. It started as a small company, then expanded and began launching advanced features. Some of the features, such as the Pomodoro and private timers, have been beneficial for employees using their time efficiently. The fact that it has automatic time tracking (along with eliminating manual timesheets) makes it much easier for employers to track employee work hours.

I’ve used the Lite plan for DeskTime the last few weeks, and I’m getting a lot out of it. It’s basic and straightforward- I can easily see my stats and track my hours spent doing productive and non-productive tasks. I’ve made some adjustments in how I go about my day, and it’s worked out for the better. Not sure if I’ll go with one of the paid plans, but I might likely be going in that direction.

  1. This looks like a tool that could either go really well or really badly depending how it is used. As a business owner, I would love to be able to see how well time is being spent. Data like that could, as your post says, really do a lot to increase productivity in your staff. However, like you also cite, it could be misused for micromanagement purposes in which case it becomes a bit of a liability. I’m not sure I would like that as an employee. However, in the right hands, it sounds awesome! Thanks for the review!

    • Of course, Steve.

I agree with what you mentioned earlier. It could be used for good or bad, so it depends on how somebody wants to use the software. But you’re right- as an employee, I don’t like the idea of being micromanaged. I would never want to micromanage my employees. If the software is used the right way, it can be an excellent time-saver and tool to track productivity.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts- I much appreciate it!

  2. Eric,

Thank you for this employer time tracker software, desktime review. To me, the URL and app tracking would be very beneficial. Getting rid of the manual time sheets would be great also. And more accurate. The pros you have laid out look to outweigh the cons in my opinion. There is just so much time wasted. I’m not saying my people should be constantly working all day, but I imagine if I added up all the wasted time I would want to puke.

    Thank you.

    • Of course, Russ.

Yes, there are some neat pros to this software. No more manual timesheets are beneficial, along with the URL/app tracking. It helps get rid of unnecessary time wasters, for sure.

You’re right to point out that we can’t be working all the time, so a time tracker such as Desktime would help identify those hidden spots. I know how you feel about wanting to puke; it’s not the best feeling in the world.

Thanks again for sharing- much appreciated!

  3. This application is fascinating. During my years in management, there have been times something like this would have been useful. This type of program would be quite effective in managing remote employees. With so many people working at home right now, DeskTime could be an excellent way to track the productivity of those who are unaccustomed to telecommuting. The downside, as you mention, is that it could seem kind of “creepy” like you’re spying on employees. Honestly, I’ve known managers that might abuse a system like this, but overall, I think it could be beneficial. As I was reading your article, I was considering ways I might use this product to track my own time working at home. It could help with time management and staying focused, even for someone self-employed. I will be looking into this further.

    • Thanks, Randy. It’s great to hear from you about your years in management.

As a young individual, I can’t imagine how you and your peers worked together. It seems so much easier today than in your early years. With more people working remotely, this software can help track productivity accurately. But as long as it’s used properly (not for micromanaging), it can be a valuable tool to have on hand.

It’s good to know you’re thinking about ways to keep track of your time. If you’re interested in signing up for Desktime, I’d love to hear your thoughts down the road. Feel free to drop a message via the contact page about your experiences.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. I much appreciate what you have to say, and the best of luck.

  4. I am actually learning about desk time for the first time and it will be great to be able to know what my time has achieved for me. getting the total productivity achieved and the time input can help me to manage my time effectivetly. the video is explicit and clear. thank you very much for this.

    • No problem, Kirkman. I’m glad to know your curiosity about Desktime sparked a bit.

There are pros and cons to using the time tracker, but overall, it can help manage your time better. I’m glad the video helped briefly explain how Desktime works. It’s an excellent overview; I can say the least!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts- much appreciated!

  5. this is an awesome article on employer time tracker software.

having the ability to track what we do with our time is what this software provides and the truth is that no matter how hard we try, we can not fully give account of the productivity of our time. i would like to use this software as i think that it will help me a lot

    • Of course, Smoochi. It’s great to know you enjoyed reading this review on Desktime.

I agree that being able to track our time is a big benefit to using the software. Even if we were to track time on our own merits, sometimes that’s not enough. So that’s where Desktime comes in to address those little problems.

That’s great to know you’re interested in using it. Feel free to sign up and look over the plans they provide. You can always set up a free account if you don’t want to pay now.

Other than that, thanks so much for sharing your feedback. I greatly appreciate what you have to say about this product.
